X-rays usually have no side effects in the typical diagnostic range of this exam.

There is always a slight risk of cancer from excessive exposure to radiation. However, the benefit of an accurate diagnosis far outweighs the risk.
The effective radiation dose for this procedure varies.
Occasional patients may have an allergic reaction to the flavoring added to some brands of barium oral contrast. Be sure to tell your radiologist or technologist of any allergies.
Women should always inform their radiologist or technologist if there is any chance that they are pregnant.
